Shoji Satake

I can relate to this artist because I too was born in one country and raised in another. He was born in Japan and raised in America. His work is his way of combining both cultures by using two different clays and creating two different textures. I think the finished work is quite beautiful.

I think this work would apply to Saoirse because of the combination of clays and the use of floral imagery. The artist also is inspired my nature.

"to create a harmonious existence between two distinct forms that can only exist together"

"The contrasts in these two philosophies of nature are reflected in the disparate forms I choose, which are dependent on one another for symbiosis."

"life will find a way is the metaphor for an individuals search to find a place of belonging."

Amy Santoferraro

I like how the artist uses found objects. She takes inspiration from the found object in creating ceramic work and then put the two together to make a unique piece. I also enjoy the whimsical theme the artist uses. Her work is fun and enjoyable.

I think this work could apply to Zarah and Danielle because the work is made using porcelain.
The artist uses slip casting in her work which is common with numerous peers in my class.

"Collections are spectacularly selfish
satisfactions that are classless and limitless."

"strategically collecting objects to organize and
make sense of our surroundings through interactions with the material world."

"objects whose usefulness has been exhausted and awaits deliverance to a new
imagined life."

"I relentlessly tinker with objects ceramicly until they fit and work in a way
that is very mine."

"I enjoy putting objects and stories together
piece by piece and welcome the layers and silly connections that develop from my making
and thought processes."

I like the simplicity of the forms. I also think the work is very commercial because its primarily functional. The concept and statement are quite shocking because of the relation the work has to sexually transmitted infections and prostitution.

I think this work could apply to Saoirse and Gillian only because the work is thrown.

"these objects that offer an intimate relationship with the user and provide the objects with an inherent value that gives them a life of their own."

"The audience we often want to reach with concerns is quite often not the same audience who may contemplate the issues addressed in pieces that may be viewed in a gallery or museum setting."

Kristin Schimik

I enjoy this Artists work. I find the textures and colouring of the clay interesting. I also like the use of subtle print. The artist uses materials such as coal slag which is a by product of our energy production. I find this technique interesting and leaves a beautiful effect. I found the artist concept inspiring as she deals with transformations in clay through time and I too am working with transformations.

I think that Saoirse would find this work interesting because the techniques used with layering.
I also think Laura might find this artist useful because of the rough surface texture.
"I am interested in the dynamic transformation of materials within the context of deep time."
"The intuitive resonance of materials figures heavily in my process."

My personal reaction to the artist work is pleasant. I like the work and I appreciate the skill involved. I find the work aesthetically pleasing and I like the presentation. The work is also finished to high standard and quality has always been something I admire in work.

I think that Gillian might appreciate this work because of the quality of the surface. The artist 'crumbles, layers and distorts' his work which is similar to some Gillian's work. I think she might find the statement useful. http://artaxis.org/statements/schmidt-thomas.pdf

"I am driven by a sense of discovery that develops as I investigate materials."
"imbued with layers of material memory that echo, embellish and obscure the original
event"
"I am interested in mining the zone between two and three-dimensional space."
"the work steps beyond questions of materiality into an
exploration of perception itself."
